City of flowers

Looking down as you walk the streets of Wash DC there is a remarkable feel of springtime in December and January.  It’s glorious and reassuring at the same time–to see the life of the city in flowers and greenery in such careful and meticulously tended landscapes.  Lilyturf (Lyriope)  or Ribbongrass is everywhere, a lush, still very green, matted ground cover,  along with Petunias and Violas of every color and sort– but especially purples.   I’ve read the same thing about Paris, that its most beautiful structures are embedded into the sidewalks and lower parts of buildings at street level and that to look up only detracts from the pleasures of the city. And on that note, look down……..then up.
